The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team won its second game on day one of the Florida swing, topping Bloomfield College by a 14-5 margin. The Spartans improved to 7-3 on the season with Bloomfield dropping to 1-7. Combined with their 20-3 victory over Caldwell earlier in the day, STAC exploded for 33 runs over the two victories.
Nick Gargan got the ball rolling, driving in Joseph Pena with a 1st-inning single, and Giovanni Dingcong's two-RBI hit the following inning keyed a four-run uprising, giving STAC a quick 5-0 advantage.
Despite giving up three unearned runs in the bottom of the 4th, Sam Vincenzo turned in a strong start, allowing no earned runs and six hits in his five innings of work.
With STAC nursing a 5-3 lead, Pena came through with a 4th inning RBI triple, and Gargan drove in two more with a three-bagger of his own, as the Spartans claimed a 9-3 cushion. The Deacons mustered a pair in the home 8th, but STAC sprayed four hits in a four-run 9th inning to seal the deal.
Vincenzo earned his first win as a Spartan, while Gargan and Dingcong led the offense with three RBI each. Greg Dawber and John DeAngelis each came off the bench to record a pair of hits for STAC.
After a day off Sunday, the Spartans return to action Monday evening, taking on Barry University in a 6:00 pm start. They will play Adelphi Tuesday, and a pair of single games against Southern Connecticut on Wednesday and Thursday - all in Florida - before heading home.
Please Note - Due to unplayable conditions at Provident Bank Park, the scheduled home opening weekend against St. Anselm's College will be played at a site to be determined. Please check the schedule for updates.
