Spartan Baseball Splits Pair in NC, Dropping LeMoyne Before Falling to Bloomsburg

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team split a pair of contests in Thomasville, NC, defeating LeMoyne College by a 10-2 count before dropping a 7-4 decision against Bloomsburg University. The Spartans are now 3-2 overall and close out their weekend trip against Seton Hill on Sunday.

In Saturday's opener, a scoreless deadlock was broken as the Spartans scored all the runs they would need in the home third. With two on and none out, Deven Del Priore stroked a three-run homer, followed immediately by Anthony Shkrelja's first of the season to give STAC a 4-0 cushion.

Joey Pena and Chris Ruiz hit solo shots in the next two innings, and Anthony Morris cruised through five shutout innings before yielding a pair of runs in the top of the 6th. STAC answered quickly in the bottom half, with Giovanni Dingcong doubling in a run and Ryan Coulon bringing in a pair with another two-bagger to make the score 9-2. Shkrelja's RBI single in the 7th closed out the scoring, as five Spartan hurlers combined to hold the Dolphins in check, with Morris earning his second victory of the season.

In the late-afternoon matchup, John Bednarek traded zeroes with Bloomsburg's Mike Warren, with the first run scoring on a Bednarek wild pitch in the home 5th. Dingcong boosted the Spartan offense with a three-run shot in the 7th, giving STAC a 3-1 advantage.

That lead would not hold, however, as a throwing error led to a pair of game-tying runs in the bottom half. The flood gates opened in the next inning, with Bloomsburg plating four runs on just a pair of hits, more than negating Dingcong's second homer of the game in the top of the 9th.

Dingcong accounted for three hits and four RBIs for the game, with Tyler Patane tagged with the loss in relief to fall to 0-1.

After Sunday's weekend finale, the Spartans will be off until their seven-game southern swing that begins on Friday, March 10, against Franklin Pierce at the USA National Baseball Complex in Cary, NC. The Spartans' home opener is slated for Saturday, March 18, with an 11:00 am double-header at Palisades Credit Union Park against St. Anselm.
