STAC Baseball Drops ECC Weekend Series Opener at LIU Post

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team fell behind early and never recovered en route to a 25-5 East Coast Conference defeat at LIU Post. The Spartans have now dropped five straight and four in conference play to slip to 9-13, 1-4, while LIU Post improves to 14-9, 5-0.

Post needed little time to break open a lead, as they combined four hits and a costly STAC error to record five runs in the bottom of the first. STAC got on the board in the visiting third at Tyler Patane's RBI double trimmed the deficit to 5-2, but Zach Fritz responded with a three-run homer in the bottom half to stake the hosts to a six-run lead.

St. Thomas Aquinas again cut into the deficit in the fourth, as Andrew Jemison and Angelo Baez each came through with run scoring hits to make the tally 8-4. Once again, LIUP had the answer, pushing across three runs to open an 11-4 chasm, which stayed the same until the Pioneers blew the game open with a six-run seventh and eight more in the bottom of the eighth inning. Michael D'Andrea's RBI double closed out the scoring for STAC in the ninth.

Jemison, Patane, and Baez each registered a pair of hits for the visitors, while Giovanni Ciaccio and Andy Camillo each came through with four-hit games for the Pioneers, as Chris Cepeda started and took the loss while James Varela was the recipient of the run support to claim the win.

The series now shifts to Rockland County as the teams will play a Saturday-afternoon conference double-header, with first pitch at 1:00 pm before shifting back to Long Island to close out the weekend. The Spartans will then be off until their next ECC series, starting on Friday, April 5 against Molloy.
