Spartans Fall to 4-2 Defeat at Mercy

The St.. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team dropped a 4-2 East Coast Conference decision at Mercy College on Thursday. The Spartans slide to 15-20 overall on the season and 7-10 in ECC play, while Mercy improves to 15-22-1, 7-10.

Mercy got on the board in the home second on an Adonis Garcia solo homer, and added two more in the third on a John Mooradian RBI single and an Anthony Murphy sacrifice fly. Starter Chris Cepeda kept his team within reach, but a sac fly by Mooradian in the seventh combined with a struggling Spartan offense to create a 4-0 deficit.

STAC showed signs of life in the top of the eighth as Anthony Maisano's one-out single brought in Angelo Baez and Michael Morgan to cut the gap in half, but Mavericks starter Jack Kelly avoided further damage and Andrew Hernandez tossed a scoreless ninth to earn the save. Tyler Patane had three of his team's six hits to lead St. Thomas Aquinas.

Due to inclement weather in the weekend forecast, the teams will now play a double-header at Mercy College with STAC as the home team on Friday, April 19, starting at 10 am. The series will then wrap up on Tuesday, April 23, at Palisades Credit Union Park, with Mercy serving as the home team in a 4:00 pm start.
