STAC Falls in Opener at Queens, 4-0; Nightcap Postponed to Monday

The St. Thomas Aquinas College baseball team dropped an East Coast Conference contest at Queens College by a 4-0 count. The second game of the scheduled double-header was postponed, leaving the Spartans at 18-23 overall and 10-13 in the ECC, with Queens now at 23-18-1, 12-11. STAC is now two games behind Queens for the fourth and final ECC Tournament berth with five games remaining.

Eric Roubal's two-RBI double in the bottom of the first provided all the scoring the Knights would need, though the Spartans did threaten. Starter Chris Cepeda kept the visitors close after the tough first inning, but the Spartans could not score despite putting runners at second and third with none out in the fifth, and a runner at third with one out in the sixth.

Joe O'Rourke's solo homer in the bottom half opened the gap to 3-0, and STAC again put two on with none out in the seventh but couldn't find the timely hit. Knights starter Mike Lamneck yielded after seven shutout innings, and the hosts added an insurance run in the last of the eighth on Louis Antos' fielders choice RBI. The Spartans had one more chance in the final frame, loading the bases with one out before reliever James McGhee worked out of the jam to pick up the save. STAC left 10 runners on base in taking the loss.

The series will now conclude on Monday at Queens, in a 3:00 pm start. The game scheduled for Thursday against Southern Connecticut State has been canceled, and the Spartans will close out the regular-season with a four-game weekend set against NYIT. STAC will travel to Long Island on Friday and Sunday and will host a Senior Day twin-bill on Saturday with a 12:00 noon start.
