The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team suffered a heartbreaking a 15-14 setback to Queens College in ECC action on Friday afternoon at Hennekens Stadium in Queens, NY. The Spartans fall to 17-3 overall, with an 11-3 ECC mark, while Queens improves to 11-8, 9-7.
Powering the STAC Offense was James Versage, who went 2-for-3, with 2 home runs, 7 RBI and 2 Runs Scored. Other key contrbutors on the day were; Andrew Jemison (2-for-5, Home Run, RBI, 2 Runs Scored), Anthony Maisano (2-for-4, Double, RBI, 3 Runs Scored), Andrew Guerra (1-for-2, Home Run, 2 RBI, 1 Run Scored), Sean Lynch (1-for-4, Home Run, RBI, 1 Run Scored) and Gregory DiGiaro (2-for-5 with a Run Scored).
On the Mound, Angelo Baez got the start for the Spartans and was not his sharpest, as Baez surrendered 12 hits and 11 runs (6 earned) in 3.1 innings of work, while walking 2 and striking out 5. Middle relievers Dylan Leahy, Orin Winslow, Yanni Orfanidis and Justin Baeyens combined to hold the Knights to only 3 hits, while walking 3 and fanning 8 over 4.2 innings. In the ninth inning, STAC conceded their 3-run lead, as first TJ Gregory faced six Queens batters, and did not record an out, giving up 3 hits and 4 runs (4 earned), while walking 3. James Reilly then entered the game and would give up the bases-loaded sacrifice fly to end the game and put Queens on top for good at 15-14. Gregory was tagged the hard-luck loss for STAC, as he moves to 2-1 on the season.
