Spartans Suffer 12-7 Road Setback at Jefferson University

Philadelphia, Pa. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team suffered its second straight defeat, falling to Jefferson University, 12-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Field in the City of Brotherly Love.

STAC drops to 3-7 on the season, while Jefferson improves to 5-4.

How it Happened

  • The Rams scored nine first-inning runs on the strength of a Josh Lopez single, Ryan Sawyer three-run homer, Chris McLean RBI single, Alex Gonzalez 2-RBI double and Lucas DeStefano RBI single.
  • STAC got back into the game, scoring three runs in the third inning, with Danny Di Marzo drawing a bases loaded RBI hit by pitch, Gregory DiGiaro picking up an RBI fielder's choice and Andrew Guerra recording an RBI ground out to make it 9-3.
  • In the bottom of the third, Jefferson would score twice more, as Efrain Santiago would reach first base on a fielding error, scoring a run and Alex Gonzalez crossing the plate on a wild pitch, making it 11-3.
  • Andrew Jemison would cut the deficit to 11-4, coming around to score on a wild pitch.
  • Gregory DiGiaro and C.J. Cumbo helped the Spartans pick up a pair of runs in the seventh on a double and sacrifice fly, respectively to narrow the gap on the scoreboard to 11-6.
  • Lucas DeStefano added an additional for the Rams on and RBI single to make it 12-6.
  • STAC got one back in the eighth on a Gregory DiGiaro RBI single, but that would be the final run of the day, with the hosts winning 12-7.

Top STAC Performances

  • Sean Lynch picked up three hits in four at-bats, with a walk and two runs scored.
  • Gregory DiGiaro went 3-for-5, with two doubles, three RBI and a run scored.
  • Will Kindl (L, 0-2) got the start for STAC and lasted just one-third of an inning, surrendering five hits and seven runs, while walking two and striking out one.
  • Relievers Andrew Alameda, Yanni Orfanidis, Mateo Reyes and Orin Winslow combined to throw 7.2 inning, giving up 10 hits and five runs, while walking two and fanning seven.
