Spartans Drop Doubleheader at Mercy

Dobbs Ferry, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team dropped an East Coast Conference road doubleheader to Mercy College, 4-2 and 3-1 on Saturday afternoon, with the Mavericks taking the three-game series, two games to one.

STAC falls to 15-20 overall and 8-7 in conference action, while Mercy improves to 17-19-1 and 10-5 in ECC play.

How it Happened - Game One

  • STAC posted two first inning runs on the strength of an Andrew Jemison RBI double, scoring Nick O'Connor and Gregory DiGiaro's sacrifice fly to left field, bringing Jemison to the plate.
  • The host Mavericks took a one run lead in the third inning via a single to center field and a two-run homer to left field, making it 3-2.
  • Mercy picked up an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI sacrifice fly to center field to take a 4-2 advantage, which would be the final outcome.
  • Spartan starter John Archer (3-5) took the loss in game one, giving up five hits and four runs over five innings. He also allowed a walk and struck out six.
  • Yanni Orfanidis came on in relief and hurled three shutout innings, only surrendering two hits and a walk, while fanning two.

How it Happened - Game Two

  • The Spartans got the scoring started in the second inning on Gregory DiGiaro's seventh home run of the season, a solo shot, to make it 1-0.
  • Mercy took the lead in the third on an RBI single to center field and an RBI sac-fly, also to center field, to make it 2-1 Mavericks.
  • An RBI single to center field in the sixth gave the Mavericks one final insurance run and the victory, 3-1.
  • Mark Barillas (2-2) got the ball in the second game and threw five innings in a losing cause. He gave up five hits and two runs (all unearned), while walking three and K'ing three.
  • Bryan Krolikowski and Justin Baeyens combined to pitch one inning out of the bullpen, surrendering a pair of hits and an unearned run, while striking out one.
