Spartans Complete Series Sweep, Taking Two From Staten Island 17-7 & 6-4

Pomona, N.Y. -  The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team completed a three-game series sweep, taking both ends of Saturday's doubleheader with the College of Staten Island, 17-7 and 6-4, at Clover Stadium. The Spartans improved to 9-12 overall and 3-0 in East Coast Conference play, while Staten Island fell to 6-11 overall and 0-3 in conference play.
 
Game One: STAC 17, CSI 7

  • Staten Island opened the scoring with a run in both the top of the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Christopher Conti's RBI sacrifice fly in the second inning, brought Andrew Guerra to the plate to cut the deficit to 2-1.
  • STAC put up a six-run fourth inning, as Kyle Lagrutta got things started with two RBI single, scoring both Andrew Guerra and Danny Di Marzo to give the hosts a 3-2 lead. Next, Sean Lynch would come home via a balk to increase the margin to 4-2. A C.J. Cumbo two RBI double, allowed Lagrutta and Christopher Conti to score, to make it 6-2. Finally, an Andrew Jemison RBI single scored Cumbo to push the lead to 7-2.
  • CSI got one back in the fifth, before Christopher Conti reached first on an error in the bottom of the frame, with Andrew Guerra scoring on the play to make it 8-3 STAC.
  • The Spartans put up five more runs in the sixth on an Andrew Guerra single, and Sean Lynch Triple, scoring Matthew Johnson, Eric Volpi and Danny Di Marzo to give the maroon and gold a 12-3 advantage. Lynch would eventually come around to score as well in the frame via a wild pitch to make it 13-3.
  • The Dolphins got runs in the seventh and eighth to cut the margin to eight at 13-5.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas continued its scoring barrage in the bottom of the eighth, as Peter Schimmel doubled to plate Andrew Guerra, a David Potenza ground out brought home Trevor Smith, a Tommy Guidice double scored Schimmel and a Matthew Johnson single allowed Guidice to score, making it 17-5.
  • Staten Island scored two runs late in the ninth inning to make it 17-7, but STAC held on for a 10-run victory.
  • STAC Starter John Archer (W, 2-3) picked up the victory, going seven innings, and surrendering five hits and four runs (three earned), while walking five and fanning four.
  • Will Kindle and Jaden Jorgenson combined to hurl two innings in relief, giving up four hits and three runs, while walking two and striking out one.

 
Game Two: STAC 6, CSI 4

  • A bases loaded walk to Danny Di Marzo in the bottom of the first inning got STAC on the scoreboard first, as Andrew Jemison came home to make it 1-0.
  • Andrew Guerra followed that by hitting a sacrifice fly to bring Matthew Johnson to the plate, increasing the maroon and gold lead to 2-0.
  • CSI scored a run in the second and fourth innings to tie the game a 2-2.
  • Christopher Conti's two RBI single in the bottom of the fourth, allowed both Kyle Lagrutta and Billy Minett to score, giving STAC back the advantage at 4-2.
  • A fifth inning home run by the visiting Dolphins, cut the deficit to one, 4-3.
  • The Spartans answered back in the bottom of the stanza with a two RBI single by Andrew Guerra, scoring Matthew Johnson and Eric Volpi to increase the lead to 6-3.
  • Staten Island added a run in the sixth on an RBI sac-fly, making it 6-4.
  • TJ Gregory (No-Decision) got the ball in game two and lasted only one inning, giving up two hits, while striking out two.
  • Mark Barillas, Bryan Krolikowski, Yanni Orfanidis, James Reilly and Justin Baeyens combined to pitch six innings in relief, surrendering five hits and four runs (three earned), while walking six and fanning four.
  • Yanni Orfanidis (W, 1-0) picked up the win, going 1.2 innings, while giving up a hit and a run.
  • Justin Baeyens closed the door on the Dolphins in the seventh, pitching a perfect inning, while K-ing one.
