Spartans Win Streak Ends at Four with 17-7 Setback to Molloy

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team saw its four-game win streak ended on Friday afternoon at the hands of Molloy College in a 17-7 contest at Clover Stadium.

STAC falls to 9-13 and 3-1 in the ECC, while Molloy improves to 18-6 and 4-0.

How it Happened

  • Danny Di Marzo opened the scoring in the first inning on an RBI double to left field to make it 1-0 STAC.
  • Molloy tied the game in the third inning and went ahead on the scoreboard with runs in the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead.
  • A Kyle Lagrutta ground out in the bottom of the fourth inning brought Andrew Guerra around to score, cutting the Spartan deficit to 4-2.
  • The visiting Lions plated three runs in the fifth, including a Patrick Hoffman solo homer to right field, to take a 7-2 advantage.
  • STAC would get four in the sixth, as a Kyle Lagrutta double scored Danny Di Marzo, a Christopher Conti single to center field, allowed Andrew Guerra to come to the plate, a C.J. Cumbo single to center brought home Lagrutta and an Andrew Jemison single scored Conti to close the gap to 7-6.
  • Molloy got one back in the seventh to go up 8-6, before Christopher Conti's double to center field in the bottom of the frame, sent Andrew Guerra home to make it 8-7.
  • The Lions bats stayed hot in the eighth and ninth innings, picking up eight runs on a combination of singles, doubles and sacrifice fly outs. Their only other run came via a bases loaded walk. Molloy enjoyed a comfortable 17-7 advantage through eight and half innings of play.
  • STAC had one more chance to rally in the bottom of the ninth, but Spartan batters struck out twice with a pop up sandwiched in between to give Molloy the first game of the three-game ECC series.
