STAC Baseball Sweeps Saturday Twin Bill From New Haven

West Haven, Conn. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team earned a non-conference doubleheader sweep of the University of New Haven on Saturday, defeating the Chargers on the road, by the scores of 4-1 and 4-2 at Frank Vieira Field.

STAC improves to 9-6 on the year, while New Haven slips to 6-9 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

Top 1st Inning - Sean Lynch doubled down the left field line and advanced to third base on the throw, as Joseph Scamardella scored. 1-0 STAC

Top 5th Inning - Sean Lynch doubled to leftcenter-field, scoring unearned runs in Gregory DiGiaro, Isaac Pena and Ben Moscatiello. 4-0 STAC

Btm 5th Inning - Matt McIntire homered to right-centerfield. 4-1 STAC

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

Top 1st Inning - Joseph Scamardella homered to left field with C.J. Cumbo also coming to the plate. 2-0 STAC

Btm 2nd Inning - Shaun Callahan singled and advanced to second on the throw as Casey Cerruto scored. 2-1 STAC

Top 5th Inning - Joseph Scamardella grounded into double play with the relay from the shortstop to the second baseman to the first baseman, as C.J. Cumbo was also out on the play. Meanwhile, Nick Oelcher came around to score. 3-1 STAC

Top 6th Inning - Ben Moscatiello singled down the left field line, with Chris Ewing advancing to second base and David Potenza scoring. 4-1 STAC

Btm 7th Inning - Shaun Callahan reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop with Noah Budzik out at second on a relay from the shortstop to the second baseman. Nick Ungania advanced to third base, and then scored an unearned run on a throwing error by the shortstop. 4-2 STAC

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Sean Lynch stroked two hits in seven at-bats, with a pair of doubles, while driving in four runs.
  • Kyle DeCresce went 2-for-3 on the day, while teammate Chris Ewing was 3-for-6 on the afternoon.
  • Joseph Scamardella smacked a home run in game two of the doubleheader, while going 2-for-8 overall, driving in two runs and scoring another.
  • STAC also received hits from Isaac Pena (1 for 2, Run), C.J. Cumbo (1 for 4, Run, 3 Walks), Ben Moscatiello (2 for 5, RBI, Walk) and Nick Oelcher (1 for 2, Run, Walk).
  • Andrew Alameda (3-1) took to the mound for STAC in game one on Saturday and threw a complete game, allowing only a hit and a run over seven innings, while walking three and striking out six.
  • John Archer (2-1) got the ball in game two and pitched 6.1 solid innings, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned), while walking three and striking out five New Haven hitters. 
  • Kyle Rogers came out of the bullpen to get the final two outs for the Spartans to record his fifth save of the season.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans totaled 8 runs on 12 hits, with 3 errors, while New Haven earned 3 runs on 5 hits, with 1 error.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 11 Chargers batters, while issuing 6 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 10 runners on base. Meanwhile New Haven left 8 in the doubleheader.
