STAC Drops Road Baseball Doubleheader At New Haven, 7-2 & 6-1

West Haven, Conn. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team came out on the wrong end of a Sunday doubleheader sweep at the hand of the University of New Haven. The host Chargers to 7-2 and 6-1 victories from the Spartans at Frank Vieira Field to salvage a four-game series split.

STAC slips to 9-8 on the season, while New Haven improves to 8-9 on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

Top 1st Inning - Sean Lynch doubled to left field, with Joseph Scamardella advancing to third base and C.J. Cumbo scoring. 1-0 STAC

Top 1st Inning - Kyle DeCresce singled to right field, as Sean Lynch advanced to third base and Joseph Scamardella scored. 2-0 STAC

Btm 1st Inning - Tyler Wells grounded out to second base, with Nick Ungania coming to the plate. 2-1 STAC

Btm 3rd Inning - Owen Pincince reached on a fielding error by the third baseman with Tyler Wells advancing to third base and Nick Ungania scoring an unearned run. GAME TIED 2-2

Btm 5th Inning - Tyler Wells doubled to left field, bringing Nick Ungania home. 3-2 NEW HAVEN

Btm 5th Inning - Owen Pincince tripled to right-center field as Tyler Wells scored. 4-2 NEW HAVEN

Btm 5th Inning - Shaun Callahan singled through the right side, scoring Owen Pincince. 5-2 NEW HAVEN

Btm 6th Inning - Nick Ungania singled to right-centerfield, driving in unearned runs from Joseph Frazzetta and Kenneth Franquiz. 7-2 NEW HAVEN

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

Btm 1st Inning - Owen Pincince singled to shortstop, as Tyler Wells advanced to second base, Noah Budzik advanced to third base and Nick Ungania scored. 1-0 NEW HAVEN

Btm 3rd Inning - Owen Pincince singled to shortstop with Tyler Wells scoring. 2-0 NEW HAVEN

Btm 3rd Inning - Kenneth Franquiz advanced to second base, Cole Maucere advanced to third base and Owen Pincince scored an unearned run on a wild pitch. 3-0 NEW HAVEN

Btm 3rd Inning - Casey Cerruto reached on a fielding error by the right fielder and advanced all the way to to third base, as Kenneth Franquiz and Cole Maucere both came to the plate with unearned runs. 5-0 NEW HAVEN

Btm 3rd Inning - Nick Ungania reached on a fielder's choice to second base, with Aedan Forde being forced out at second base via a relay from the second baseman to the shortstop. On the play Casey Cerruto scored another unearned run. 6-0 NEW HAVEN

Top 5th Inning - Joseph Scamardella singled through the left side, with C.J. Cumbo advancing to second base and Isaac Pena scoring. 6-1 NEW HAVEN.

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Sean Lynch stroked a double in six at-bats (1-for-6), with an RBI.
  • Kyle DeCresce went 2-for-5 on the day, while driving in a run and drawing a walk.
  • Joseph Scamardella smacked two hits in four at-bats, while driving in one run and scoring another. He also made his way on base three additional times via walks.
  • STAC also received hits from Billy Minett (1-for-3, 2B) and Chris Ewing (1-for-5)
  • Andrew Schoelles (2-1) took to the mound for STAC in game one on Sunday and pitched five innings, allowing six hits and five runs (four earned), while walking one and striking out two.
  • Jeremiah Vega came on in relief in the sixth inning and gave up two runs on one hit, while walking one and fanning one.
  • Bobby LeFevre got the ball in game two and only threw for two innings, allowing six runs (two earned) on four hits, while walking two and striking out two New Haven hitters. 
  • Cole Lindquist came out of the bullpen for the final four innings and surrendered only a walk, while K-ing three Chargers.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans totaled 3 runs on 7 hits, with 4 errors, while New Haven earned 13 runs on 11 hits, with no errors.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 8 Chargers batters, while issuing 5 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 13 runners on base. Meanwhile New Haven left 9 in the doubleheader.
