Spartans Settle for Twin Bill Split with Staten Island

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team returned to the friendly confines of Clover Stadium on Saturday afternoon, in search of back-to-back win for the first time since March 16. While the Spartans did just that, taking a 10-6 decision over the College of Staten Island in the opener of an ECC doubleheader, the team came up short in a game two, falling 5-2 to erase its short-lived two-game win streak.

STAC moves to 11-16 overall and 2-3 in ECC play, while CSI goes to 11-14 and 6-4.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

Top 1st Inning - Thomas Marten reached first on a fielding error by the second baseman, while also advancing AJ Vigliotti to second base and scoring Bryan Birkhead as an unearned run. 1-0 CSI

Btm 2nd Inning - Brian Klumpp flied out to centerfield on a sacrifice fly, scoring Kyle DeCresce. GAME TIED 1-1

Top 3rd Inning - AJ Vigliotti doubled down the right field line, bringing Michael Kehoe to the plate. 2-1 CSI

Top 3rd Inning - Chris Polemeni homered to right field, with AJ Vigliotti also scoring. 4-1 CSI

Btm 3rd Inning - Chris Ewing walked with the bases loaded, advancing Kyle DeCresce to second base, Sean Lynch to third base and Joseph Scamardella to the plate. 4-2 CSI

Top 4th Inning - Michael Kehoe reached first on a fielding error by the third baseman, moving Michael Palermo to third base and scoring Anthony Sutera as an unearned run. 5-2 CSI

Top 4th Inning - Bryan Birkhead singled up the middle, scoring Michael Palermo as an unearned run. 6-2 CSI

Btm 4th Inning - C.J. Cumbo homered to left field with Brian Klumpp also scoring. 6-4 CSI

Btm 4th Inning - Sean Lynch tripled to left-center field, bringing Joseph Scamardella home. 6-5 CSI

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME TWO:

Top 4th Inning - Vincent Weigele singled up the middle, with Thomas Marten scoring. 1-0 CSI

Top 5th Inning - AJ Vigliotti singled through the left side and advanced to second base; Bryan Birkhead advanced to third base and scored an unearned run on a fielding error by the left fielder. 2-0 CSI

Btm 5th Inning - Gregory DiGiaro homered to right field. 2-1 CSI

Top 6th Inning - Vincent Weigele singled to left field, scoring pinch runner Owen Webber. 3-1 CSI

Top 6th Inning - Michael Kehoe singled through the right side, plating a pair if unearned runs in Michael Palermo and Vincent Weigele. 5-1 CSI

Btm 7th Inning - C.J. Cumbo reached first on a throwing error by the third baseman and advanced to second base, while pinch runner Ben Moscatiello scored an unearned run. 5-2 CSI

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • C.J. Cumbo (3-for-8) and Gregory DiGiaro (2-for-7) both smacked a double and a homer in the doubleheader. Cumbo drove in three and score twice, while DiGiaro recorded two RBI and a run scored.
  • Sean Lynch went 4-for-9 on the day with a triple, an RBI and a run scored.
  • Joseph Scamardella stroked two doubles in his 3-for-7 afternoon, with two RBI and two runs scored. He was also walked twice.
  • STAC also received multi-hit performances from Chris Ewing (2-for-5, 2B, 2 RBI, Run, 2 BB), Kyle DeCresce (2-for-6, Run, BB), Billy Minett (2-for-8, Run).
  • Andrew Alameda took to the mound for STAC in game one on Saturday and pitched five innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits, while walking one and striking out four. Alameda earned his fourth win (4-2) in six decisions.
  • John Dezego threw three shutout innings in relief for the Spartans, giving up no hits, walking only one and fanning four.
  • Kyle Rogers closed out the opener with a perfect ninth inning, K-ing one Dolphins hitter.
  • John Archer got the ball in game two and pitched five innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on seven hits, while striking out three CSI hitters. Archer was charged with the loss and moves to 2-4 on the season. 
  • Andrew Speranza and Jeremiah Vega both saw time out of the bullpen for the Spartans, pitching final two innings and combining to give up three hits and three runs (one earned), while walking one and punching out three Staten Island batters.

FACTS & FIGURES:

  • The Spartans totaled 12 runs on 19 hits, with 7 errors, while Staten Island earned 11 runs on 17 hits, with 2 errors in the twin bill.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 15 Dolphins batters, while issuing 3 walks on the day.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas stranded 17 runners on base, while CSI left 12 in the doubleheader.

STAC heads to Staten Island for another doubleheader with the CSI Dolphins on Sunday, April 7. First pitch of game one is set for 12:00 p.m. with game two to start at approximately 3:00 p.m. Both games are scheduled to be nine innings in length.
