Spartans Drop Sunday Baseball Twin Bill to D'Youville

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team finally had clear skies and dry weather conditions on Sunday to kickoff its two-day, four-game series with D'Youville University at Clover Stadium. However, the visiting Saints brought their red-hot bats to the Lower Hudson Valley, sweeping both ends of the ECC doubleheader from the Spartans, 12-8 and 11-7.

STAC falls to 13-19 overall and 4-5 in ECC play, while DYU improves to 18-15 and 7-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE:

Top 2nd Inning - Jeremy Glinski tripled down the right field line and scored on a throwing error by the second baseman. 1-0 DYU

Top 2nd Inning - Hunter Nowak singled to second base, as Alec Boucher scored. 2-0 DYU

Btm 2nd Inning - Tyler Haydt grounded out to third base, with Chris Ewing making his way to the plate. 2-1 DYU

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Gregory DiGiaro smacked three hits in nine at-bats, with a double, a triple and a home run. He also drove in two runs and scored another three. Greg was also walked once.
  • Sean Lynch and Chris Ewing each went 3-for-8 in the doubleheader, with Lynch picking up an RBI and two runs scored while Ewing also scored two runs. Both Spartans also earned a walk apiece.
  • Kyle DeCresce posted a two-hit day in six tries, and drove in two runs.
  • The Spartans also saw hits from Brian Klumpp (1-for-2, 2B, RBI, Run), Nick Oelcher (1-for-3, RBI, Walk), Billy Minett (1-for-4, RBI, Run), Tyler Haydt (1-for-6, 2B, RBI, Run, 3 Walks), David Potenza (1-for-7, HR, 2 RBI, 2 Runs, Walk), Joseph Scamardella (1-for-8, Run, 2 Walks) and C.J. Cumbo (1-for-8, HR, 3 RBI, 2 Runs, Walk).
  • Andrew Alameda got the start in game one of the Sunday twin bill and threw seven innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits, while walking one and fanning three. Alameda was charged with the loss and falls to 4-3 on the year.
  • John Dezago and Kyle Rogers were called upon out of the bullpen for the maroon and gold and hurled an inning apiece, with Dezago allowing four runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout and Rogers giving up two runs on two hits, while walking one.
  • John Archer took the mound for game two and pitched 6.1 strong innings for the Spartans, allowing four runs on eight hits, with two walks and two strikeouts. Archer took a no-decision in the contest
  • Andrew Speranza, Jeremiah Vega and Tom O'Neill each saw time in relief of Archer and combined to allow seven runs on seven hits, while walking three and K-ing one. Andrew Speranza gets charged with the loss and falls to 0-4 on the year, for surrendering three runs on two hits, while walking one and getting no outs.

  • The Spartans totaled 15 runs on 18 hits, with 6 errors, while D'Youville earned 23 runs on 29 hits, with 4 errors in the twin bill.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 8 Saints batters, while issuing 8 walks on the day.
