Spartans Snap Winless Skid, Hold Off Molloy for 6-5 Win

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team snapped a nine-game losing streak by holding off Molloy University, 6-5 on Monday afternoon in the team's home opener at Clover Stadium.

STAC improves to 10-15 overall and 1-2 in ECC action, while Molloy slips to 18-8 and 4-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Top 3rd Inning - JJ DeVito reached first on a fielding error by the shortstop and advanced to second base on the throw, while Tyler Lebrecht scored an unearned run and Joe Burriesci scored. 2-0 MOLLOY

Btm 4th Inning - Billy Minett doubled to centerfield, scoring Chris Ewing. 2-1 MOLLOY

Btm 5th Inning - Kyle DeCresce singled through the left side, with Sean Lynch advancing to second base and Joseph Scamardella coming to the plate. GAME TIED 2-2

Btm 5th Inning - Chris Ewing flied out to centerfield on a sacrifice fly, as Sean Lynch scored an unearned run. 3-2 STAC

Btm 6th Inning - Joseph Scamardella flied out to centerfield on a sacrifice fly, with C.J. Cumbo advancing to second base, David Potenza advancing to third base and Billy Minett scoring an unearned run. 4-2 STAC

Btm 6th Inning - Sean Lynch doubled down the left field line, plating both C.J. Cumbo and David Potenza. 6-2 STAC

Top 8th Inning - Nicholas Dagnello tripled down the right field line, scoring Matt Yip. 6-3 STAC

Top 8th Inning - Patrick Sanchez singled to right-centerfield, sending Nicholas Dagnello home. 6-4 STAC

Top 8th Inning - Joe Burriesci singled down the right field line, as Patrick Sanchez came to the plate with an unearned run. 6-5 STAC.

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • C.J. Cumbo went 2-for-4 with a run scored on the afternoon. He was also walked once.
  • Sean Lynch (1-for-4, Walk) and Billy Minett (1-for-4) smacked a double each in the game, with Lynch driving in two and scoring one and Minett picking up an RBI and a run scored.
  • STAC also received hits from Joseph Scamardella (1-for-3, RBI, Run, Walk), Kyle DeCresce (1-for-2, RBI, 2 Walks), Chris Ewing (1-for-3, RBI, Run), David Potenza (1-for-2, Run, Walk).
  • Cole Lindquist (W, 1-0) got the start for STAC on Monday and pitched six solid innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits, while walking none and striking out eight to pick up his first win of the season.
  • Anthony Holtje and Jeremiah Vega were each called upon to help hold Molloy in check. The duo combined to allow four hits and three runs (two earned) over two innings, while walking none and K'ing three.
  • Kyle Rogers closed things out for the maroon and gold, getting his sixth save of the year for throwing a scoreless ninth, while allowing only two walks and fanning one Lions hitter.

  • The Spartans posted 6 runs on 8 hits, with two errors, while Molloy earned 5 runs on 9 hits, with three errors.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 12 Lions batters, while issuing just 2 walks on the day.
