STAC Baseball Drops Two To Defending ECC Champs Queens

Pomona, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Baseball team suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the defending East Coast Conference Champions, Queens College on Saturday afternoon at Clover Stadium. The visiting Knights took 13-5 and 5-2 decisions from the Spartans to win the regular season series with one game remaining on Sunday.

STAC slips to 15-22 overall and 6-8 in ECC play, while Queens improves to 23-14 and 13-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED - GAME ONE

Btm 1st Inning: Kyle DeCresce grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Joseph Scamardella. 1-0 STAC

Top 3rd Inning: Phil Krpata singled up the middle and advanced to second base on an error by the centerfielder, with Nick Barreiros making his way to the plate. GAME TIED 1-1

Top 3rd Inning: Jorsixt Jimenez doubled to right-centerfield, scoring both Robert Jacobsen (unearned run) and Phil Krpata. 3-1 QC

STAC PERFORMANCES:

  • Kyle DeCresce smacked four hits in eight at-bats, including two doubles. He also drove in four runs
  • Nick Oelcher each went 3-for-6, with a double in the twin bill, while picking up an RBI
  • The Spartans also saw multi-hit days from Joseph Scamardella (2-for-5, 3 Runs, 3 Walks) and Sean Lynch (2-for-8, 2B, RBI, Run)
  • John Archer got the start in game one of Saturday's twin bill and threw 6.0 innings, allowing six runs (three earned) on 12 hits, while fanning eight. Archer was charged with the loss and falls to 2-5 on the season.
  • Anthony Holtje, Tom O'Neill and Robert Williams were each summoned from the bullpen for the final three innings for the Spartans, combining to surrender five hits and seven runs, while walking two and striking out two.
  • Andrew Schoelles took the mound for game two and gave up two runs on eight hits over six innings of work, while walking one and K-ing four. Schoelles was charged with a no-decision.
  • Reliever Kyle Rogers came on in the seventh inning and allowed three hits and three runs, while walking one, to take the loss for the maroon and gold. Rogers slips to 0-2 on the year.

  • The Spartans totaled 7 runs on 15 hits, with 4 errors, while Queens earned 18 runs on 32 hits, with 4 errors in the twin bill.
  • STAC pitchers struck out 14 Knights batters, while issuing 4 walks on the day.
