Matt Capell Promoted to Director of eSports

St. Thomas Aquinas Director of Athletics Gerald Oswald has announced that Assistant Director of Athletics, Matt Capell has been named the Director of eSports.

Having just finished his sixth year at St. Thomas Aquinas College, Capell has served under many titles including assistant athletics director, associate head men's basketball coach, as well as, head men's and women's tennis coach, and has found success at every stop of his career.  The men's basketball team has won the most games in the NCAA Division II East Region since his arrival, and eighth most in the nation.

Coach Capell resurrected both tennis programs as well, bringing the women's team to the conference tournament for the first time in eight seasons, and his men's tennis team has been regionally ranked the past four years – earning their first selection to the NCAA Division II East Region this past year.  For his efforts, Capell was voted by his peers as the 2019 ECC Men's Tennis Coach of the Year.

Throughout his career, Capell has helped run or been the director of over 100 camps during his career.  A seventeen-year veteran coach in collegiate athletics, Capell has also been an avid gamer for the majority of his life, earning him his newest title Director of eSports.  A fan of sports games such as Madden, NBA 2k, and the NHL franchises, he has played on multiple consoles and has recently returned to the world of retro gaming on the SNES.

Capell was a member of the football, basketball, and track and field teams at Alfred University, where he graduated with honors with a BS in Electrical Engineering.
