Spartan Esports Prepares for Postseason Action

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Esports program prepares for upcoming postseason tournaments in both the East Coast Conference (ECC) and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), with six teams participating in playoff contests in Super Smash Bros., NBA 2K and Fortnite.

In ECC Super Smash Bros. action, the STAC teams have competed at a very high level in their inaugural season. Joseph Murphy currently holds a first place standing in Group One with a 7-1 record, while fellow sophomore Nicholas Shalaba is sitting atop Group Three with a 7-1 record as well. Both look to take their first place seedings into the postseason in pursuit of a championship.

Meanwhile, the ECAC Super Smash Bros. team, which is led by captain Matthew Otterstedt and includes Murphy and Shalaba as well as Zachary Longua, Stephen Saffoti, and Aiden De La Rosa, currently sits tied for first place. Holding a record of 7-1, the squad is ready to head into playoffs in pursuit of a league championship as well.

The NBA 2K teams have also secured playoff spots and look to continue their recent success heading into bracket play. Freshman Richard Brady has a record of 5-3 and is ranked fifth in the Xbox standings, while junior Dyson Hardwick has a 4-4 record and currently holds the 12-seed on the PlayStation side of the bracket.

Finally, the Fortnite team is currently in 29th place out of 58 teams with a total score of 45 through 8 weeks of action. The two-week long playoff series will get underway with juniors Caleb Franco and Dyson Hardwick looking to continue to climb the leaderboard.
