Spartans Blank Mansfield 34-0 on Senior Night

Hillburn, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Sprint Football team closed out its 2023 home schedule by posting a 34-0 shutout victory over Mansfield University on Friday evening at the Torne Valley Sports Complex.

STAC improves to 3-3 on the year, while Mansfield falls to 3-3.

Prior to the contest, the Spartans honored its graduating class; Brayan Anaman, Shawn Benard, Jayden Bennermon, Jaynique Charles, Davion Hicks, Elijah Jean, Christopher Jones, Kyle Kuhn, Andrew Levi, Elionexis Lopez, Malik Lucas, Bo Maroney, Matthew Marquez, Jr., Kyle Marsha, David Martin, Luke McKenna, Phillip Meikle, Reno Molina, Esmond Oldums, JT Perry, Rawle Prentice and Raul Ramirez, along with team manager Anna Majkut, with on-field ceremonies, which included the athletes' families, friends, teammates, coaches and college administrators.

In addition, the college welcomed back many former Spartan students for its annual Homecoming and Reunion Weekend.

STAC HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

  • Reno Molina led the way with five receptions for 127 yards and two touchdowns, while garnering four rushing attempts for another 39 yards.
  • Phillip Meikle also added a pair of touchdown catches, while picking up 93 yards.
  • Starting quarterback Ryan Kenny completed 16 of 24 passes, for 293 yards, while throwing four touchdowns and an interception. He also had ten rushing attempts and his own touchdown run in the contest.
  • Brayan Anaman, Esmond Oldums and Jayden Vargas recorded five tackles apiece in the game.
  • Anaman, Donnell White, Jr. and Andrew Riley also registered sacks on Mansfield quarterbacks Cahsid Raymond and Ben Briggs.
  • Kicker Bo Maroney went four for five on extra point attempts.

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Quarter

  • STAC struck for the game's opening score just three minutes into the stanza as Ryan Kenny's 59-yard TD strike to Reno Molina (Bo Maroney Kick Good) made it 7-0.
  • Phillip Meikle's first of two touchdown receptions came midway through the quarter on a 34-yard pass from Ryan Kenny (Bo Maroney Kick Good) to double the Spartans' lead at 14-0.

Second Quarter

  • Phillip Meikle opened the second quarter scoring by catching a 39-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Kenny (Bo Maroney Kick Good) to make it a 21-0 game for the maroon and gold, just a minute into the new frame.
  • Reno Molina grabbed his second TD reception, this one a 29-yarder from Ryan Kenny, (Bo Maroney Kick Good) to blow the game open at 28-0 in favor of the Spartans, with 6:08 to play before halftime.

Third Quarter

  • No Scoring.

Fourth Quarter

  • Ryan Kenny's 1-yard scamper to the end zone (Bo Maroney Kick Blocked) closed the scoring and gave STAC a commanding 34-0 advantage.

St. Thomas Aquinas closes out the 2023 season, visiting Cornell University on Friday, November 3. Kickoff between the Spartans and Big Red is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Schoellkopf Field in Ithaca, N.Y.
