Spartans Fall 2-0 to Southern New Hampshire

The St. Thomas Aquinas field hockey team lost, 2-0 to Southern New Hampshire on Sunday afternoon.  The Spartans put up a fight but again struggled to get good looks on goal recording only a single shot on goal.  Jessica Stewart continued her solid play with twelve saves in the loss.

SNHU's Maddie Holt set the tone with her goal in the fourth minute to put the Penmen on the scoreboard.  Holt drilled a low shot from the middle-right of the circle that snuck inside the far left post.

The game stayed at 1-0 into the 62nd minute when Southern New Hampshire was finally able to double its lead in a wild sequence of events. Junior Erin Frost sent a pair of shots on net that were saved by STAC goalkeeper Jessica Stewart before the second rebound squirted out to the right where Cassidy Huckins hit a quick shot that was again stopped by a diving Stewart.

The Penmen were awarded a penalty stroke and another shot to the top-left corner of the cage was blocked away by Stewart, but the officials awarded a second stroke to SNHU as the ball was originally placed on the wrong spot. Laura Van der Doorn made good on her second attempt as it ricocheted off Stewart's blocker and into the top-right corner of the net.

The Spartans will return to action when they travel to local opponent Mercy College for a 4:00 p.m. game.
