Spartans Fall to Adelphi Panthers in Regular Season Road Finale, 3-2

Taylor Hickey and Briannah Thorne each scored goals for St. Thomas Aquinas College, however it was not enough as the Adelphi University Panthers picked up the 3-2 win against the Spartans at Motamed Field in Garden City, New York on Tuesday.

In their final road contest of the 2018 campaign, STAC opened the scoring a little over twenty minutes into the opening half, as Taylor Hickey received a return pass from teammate Briannah Thorne after Hickey's Penalty Corner and proceeded to deposit a shot into the back of the Adelphi net, making it 1-0 St. Thomas Aquinas. However, the panthers tied things up at one goal apiece just seven minutes later, when Elissa Frein scored on a high cross pass from Jackie Brown to close out the scoring for the first stanza.

The second half began with a quick strike by Adelphi University, as Elissa Frein picked up her second goal (6th of the season) of the afternoon just under three minutes in, giving the Panthers a 2-1 advantage. Later in the match, Emily Power was able to double the lead for the home squad, knotting her sixth of the year, pushing the scoreboard to 3-1. St. Thomas Aquinas was not going to just go quietly into the late October evening, as Briannah Thorne picked up her team-leading ninth goal of the season, pushing the Adelphi lead back to one at 3-2 with just under nine minutes to play. Unfortunately, the complete comeback was not in the cards on this day and the Panthers closed out the game and picked up the victory.

Spartan goalie Suzanne Clarke made 10 saves on the afternoon, while Leah Savage picked up 3 saves in net for Adelphi.

The Lions held a commanding 23-5 shots advantage, and a modest 11-5 edge on penalty corners.

St. Thomas Aquinas College closes out their 2018 regular season on Sunday, October 28 at Spartan Field against the Saint Michael's College Purple Knights. Game time is scheduled for 11am with Senior Day festivities to precede the match.
