The St. Thomas Aquinas College Field Hockey team suffered a 3-2 overtime setback on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy College in Dobbs Ferry. This was the second of a 2-game season series between the schools, which saw St. Thomas Aquinas take the first meeting 2-1 in overtime at Spartan Field back on September 5.

In the first half, the Mavericks jumped on the board just a little over five minutes into the match, as Sabrina Anderson tallied her first of the season on a shot, which deflected off of the Spartan defense and went behind goalie Suzanne Clarke to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. St. Thomas Aquinas knotted the game a one goal apiece a little over twenty five mintues into the opening stanza, as Arielle Rodriguez scored her second of the season with the help of a Kaylee Pistner pass. Then, just 1:31 later, Briannah Thorne gave STAC a 2-1 advantage with her seventh of the year, off of a penalty corner pass by Lotte Strijbos to conclude the scoring for the half.

Angela Robbins opened the second half with her second goal of the season, just 2:15 into the final period of regulation to square things a 2-2. That was all of the scoring that either team could muster, which forced the two squads to decide things in extra time.

Overtime saw back and forth action by both teams, however it was the Mercy Mavericks who were able to break the tie and take the victory, as Alicia Williams tallied her fourth of the season on a breakaway pass from Angela Robbins.

Spartan keeper Suzanne Clarke made 9 saves on the day, while goalies Julia Amell (2 saves) and Cheradyn Pettit (9 saves) saw time in the net for Mercy, with Pettit picking up the win.

The Spartans had a 19-14 shots advantage and a 7-1 edge on penalty corners.

St. Thomas Aquinas College will next host Bellarmine University at Spartan Field on Saturday, October 13 with the opening draw scheduled for 11am.
