Spartan Field Hockey Shutout at Manhattanville, 2-0

The St. Thomas Aquinas Field Hockey team lost to Manhattanville College, 2-0 on Thursday evening in Purchase, NY.

A stalemate for the first two quarters, both squads traded quality scoring chances, with Spartan goalie Suzanne Clarke and Valiants netminder Zoe Fillebrown each making a number of stops in order to keep things scoreless through the first 30 minutes of action.

In the third quarter, Manhattanville was able to capitalize a little over three minutes into the frame, when Ava Panzar connected on a pass from Ameerah Thomas off of a successful penalty corner attempt by teammate Robin Boot to make it a 1-0 Valiants advantage. Almost seven an a half minutes later, Manhattanville struck again, as this time Ameerah Thomas took an Ava Panzar pass and deposited it into the back of the net, past Spartan keeper Clarke to extend the lead to 2-0.

Fourth quarter action saw the Spartans attempt to rally back, down two goals, as Kaitlyn Gutenberger, Briannah Thorne, Lauren Cooper, and Lotte Strijbos each had a number of Grade A chances to get STAC on the scoreboard. However, the Valiants defense and goaltending kept the game in check and halted any attempts at a maroon and gold comeback on this night.

STAC keeper Suzanne Clarke (L, 2-3) made 2 saves on the night, while her counterpart in the Manhattanville goal, Zoe Fillebrown (W, 4-1) made 6 stops.

St. Thomas Aquinas held an 18-5 shots advantage and a 9-4 edge in penalty corners for the game.

The Spartans (2-3) will now have the next six days off to practice and prepare for their next contest, which will be against Assumption College on Wednesday, September 25th in Worcester, Massachusetts. Gametime is set for 1pm.
