Thorne Nets Game-Winner as STAC Bests Molloy 2-1

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Field Hockey team held off the Molloy College Lions to pick up a 2-1 victory on Saturday afternoon in Seaford, NY.

In the first quarter action, the Spartans took a 1-0 lead ten minutes in when Jade Hall deflected a Lisa Larsson shot past Lions goalie Ally Saigh for her fourth of the season. The slim margin would hold up through the final five minutes of action in the opening frame.

The second quarter would see St. Thomas Aquinas double their lead, as Briannah Thorne would strike for her team-leading 11th of the season with just over two minutes left before halftime to give STAC a 2-0 advantage.

After the break, Lizzie Weiner would get Molloy on the scoreboard as she would be awarded a penalty stroke, which she would convert just before the end of the third quarter to trim the visiting maroon and gold lead to 2-1.

STAC would play a perfect fourth quarter, as their defense would keep the Lions off the stat sheet. Molloy failed to pull even and would register no shots in the final fifteen minutes, giving the Spartans the hard earned victory.

Spartan keeper Suzanne Clarke (W, 7-8) faced no shots on the day and teammate Jessie Hohenstein made 3 saves, while their counterpart in the Lions goal, Ally Saigh (L, 1-7) went the distance and made 6 saves.

STAC held both an 11-8 shots advantage and a 3-1 penalty corners edge for the game.

St. Thomas Aquinas (8-8) will continue their NE-10 playoff push, as they close out their 2019 regular season home schedule, taking on Southern Connecticut State University on Wednesday, October 30th at 3pm.
