Cooper's Goal Not Enough in 2-1 Loss to American International

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Field Hockey team suffered a 2-1 setback versus American International College on Wednesday afternoon at Spartan Field in Sparkill, NY.

In first quarter action, the Spartans would get on the scoreboard 9:50 into the match, as Lauren Cooper would make her way past the AIC defense, spin and fire a shot past Yellow Jacket keeper Nikki Bates to make it 1-0 STAC. The slim one goal margin would hold up through the end of the frame.

American International would tie things up, when Jenny Holmquist would poke in a loose rebound off of a third consecutive penalty corner with time having already expired in the stanza. The teams would retreat to their respective sidelines for halftime with the game deadlocked at one goal apiece.

No scoring would take place in the third quarter as both teams would battle for position and possession, keeping the play largely to the middle of the field. However, when the ball would enter either offensive zone, it would be kept to the perimeter by the respective defenses.

The fourth and final quarter of play would see the visiting Yellow Jackets strike quickly, 1:49 in to be exact, as Jenny Holmquist would redirect a Georgia Barnes shot past STAC goalie Suzanne Clarke, for her second of the game, making it 2-1 AIC. St. Thomas Aquinas would try to rally back and force overtime, however American International would lock down their own end and protect their net to preserve the victory.

Spartan keeper Suzanne Clarke (L, 6-8) made 10 stops on the day and teammate Jessie Hohenstein made 2 saves, while their counterpart in the Yellow Jackets goal, Nikki Bates (W, 3-3) went the distance and made 6 saves.

American International held both a 23-10 shots advantage and 9-7 penalty corners edge for the game.

St. Thomas Aquinas (7-8) will continue their NE-10 playoff push, as they travel to Molloy College for a noon contest on Saturday, October 26th. The match will be played at Cedar Creek Park in Seaford, NY.
