Spartan Field Hockey Doubled Up By Stonehill Skyhawks 4-2

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Field Hockey team dropped a 4-2 decision to the Stonehill College Skyhawks on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field in Sparkill, NY.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Spartans got themselves on the scoreboard, early in the second stanza, courtesy of Jade Hall's third of the season on a great pass from Meghan McCarren to make it 1-0 in favor of the maroon and gold. The STAC defense and goalie Suzanne Clarke would make the slim one goal lead hold up as the squads headed to their respective benches for halftime.

In the third quarter, the visiting Skyhawks struck twice for goals in a span of two minutes, as Emma Mawn and Mackenzie Quigley netted their sixth and third of the season respectively, to give Stonehill a 2-1 advantage. Despite a barrage of shots directed toward the Spartan goal in the frame, the STAC defense and goaltending kept the game within reach going into the final quarter of play.

However, things would change in the fourth quarter, as Stonehill quickly expanded their lead to 4-1 on the strength of back-to-back goals by Mackenzie Quigley, to complete the hat trick. St. Thomas Aquinas would try to get themselves back into the game and would cut the Skyhawk lead to two, when Lotte Strijbos would take a Briannah Thorne feed and deposit it into the back of the cage to make it 4-2 with just under five minutes remaining in the contest. Unfortunately, time would become the enemy of the Spartans and the visitors from Easton, Mass. would close things out for the victory.

Spartan keeper Suzanne Clarke (L, 3-6) made 11 stops on the day, while her counterpart in the Stonehill goal, Katie Lammando (W, 6-3) went the distance and did not record a save.

The visiting Skyhawks held a 17-3 shots advantage and an 8-5 edge in penalty corners for the game.

STAC (4-6) next hosts Pace University in another key NE-10 matchup on Wednesday, October 9th at 4pm.
