STAC Field Hockey Powers Past Mercy, 2-1

Sparkill, N.Y. – Goals by Olivia Cerbo and Hailey Galison, and a strong defensive effort would lead St. Thomas Aquinas to 2-1 victory over Mercy College on Thursday afternoon at Spartan Field in Sparkill.

The Spartans brought the energy early, coming out fast with an attack that continually worked the ball into the Mavericks half of the field throughout the first 15 minutes of action. Sophomore Olivia Cerbo broke the scoreless tie in the fifth minute, scoring off of a rebound and finding the lower left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.

STAC would double their lead just three minutes later, in the eighth minute, as Sophomore Hailey Galison would find a rebound of her own and put it past Mercy goalie Lauren Viscione, for her first of the season, to make it 2-0 through one quarter of action.

The second quarter would see Mercy outshoot STAC 5-1 in the stanza and the visitors would get themselves on the scoreboard, with three minutes remaining in the frame, via a penalty stroke goal by Kasey Volz to cut the Spartan lead to 2-1 at the halftime buzzer.

St. Thomas Aquinas would play a stifling defensive game in the third and fourth quarters, keeping Mercy to only 4 shots combined over the final 30 minutes of play. STAC goalkeeper Jessie Hohenstein would only have to stop two of those shots, with two others going wide of the net.
