The St. Thomas Aquinas Men’s Golf team finished 12th out of 18 teams in the Division II National Championship preview hosted by North Alabama University at the Robert Trent Jones “Fighting Joe” golf course. The Spartans shot team scores of 303 and 302 for a 2-day total of 605 leaving them 2 shots out of 9th place.
Leading the Spartans were the junior duo of Mike Gunderson and John Casey who both shot 2-day totals of 148 and finished in a tie for 27th place out of 93 of the top players in the country. Gunderson fired a day one low score of 73 and fired a second round 75 on the difficult 8,092 yard course. Casey who struggled in round 1 to post a 77, bounced back to form in round 2 after carding a 1-under par 71.
Senior Chris Fitzpatrick posted a 2-day score of 150 after carding consecutive rounds of 75-75 leaving him tied for 38th. Rounding out the scoring was freshman Tommy Linehan who shot rounds of 78-81 leaving him tied for 70th place.
The Spartans finish their season at the Queens University of Charlotte fall invitational down at TPC Sawgrass in Jacksonville Florida on November 1-2.
