Led by freshman Brendan Hunter, the St. Thomas Aquinas Men's golf team finished took home first place at the Goldey-Beacom Fall Invitational held at Odessa National Golf Club in Townsend, MD. Hunter continued his hot start to the fall with an opening round of 72 (E) and was backed up by fellow freshman Kevin Gately who carded a solid round of 75 (+3).
Senior Tommy Linehan and Sophomore Chris Gentle rounded out the team scoring with scores of 76 (+4) respectively. New-comer Colby Lewis posted a round of 79 in his first event with the team. Playing as individuals, Anthony Berardo played an exceptional round shooting 74 while freshman Dane Cianelli struggled in his first event shooting 83. With a day 1 score of 299, the Spartans held a 13 shot lead over regional foe Nyack College.
Holding the lead the Spartans showed their grit and played another stellar round of team golf. Hunter put together another great round of golf, posting a 73 good to earn him co-medalist honors with his 2-day score of 145 (72-73). Tommy Linehan came put together a steady round with 2 birdies and 3 bogeys to card a 73 leaving him in tied for 4th place with a 2-day score of 149 (76-73).
Freshman Kevin Gately had a nice showing in his first career start carding a final round 76 putting him in a tie for 8th place at 151 (75-76) while sophomore Chris Gentle played steady again at 76 leaving him tied for 11th place at 152 (76-76). Colby Lewis finished the event with a second round score of 78 and a two day score of 157 (79-78). Anthony Berardo played another nice round of golf posting a score of 77 good for a T-8 finish while Dane Cianelli bounced back nicely posting an even par 72 to get him into the top 20.
The Spartans finished with a day 2 score of 298 and total team score of 597 good for a 16 shot victory over the second place Concordia Clippers. The team is back in action again this weekend at the Dominican Charger Challenge at Spook Rock Golf Course in Suffern, NY.
