The St. Thomas Aquinas Men's golf team started their fall 2013 season at the "Doc Gimmler" hosted by Division I St. John's University at Bethpage State Park. Opening day had the team set to play 36 consecutive holes of golf. During round one the Spartans played a steady round of team golf posting a score of 287. Leading the team were Kai Rastetter and Niklas Koerner who carded rounds of 71.
Playing in his first ever collegiate event, freshman Brendan Hunter played like a veteran posting a score of 72. Anchoring the team was senior Tommy Linehan who battled back to shoot 73 after a tough start to his day.
With no break, the Spartans continued their solid play in round two. Kai Rastetter played a spectacular round of golf, firing a 3-under 67. Freshman Brendan Hunter and junior Niklas Koerner played another steady round of golf posting scores of 72 while sophomore Chris Gentle bounced back to card a 77. The Spartans found themselves in the middle of the pack of some high profile Division I programs after their day one team score of 575 (287-288).
On the third round the team managed another great round of golf, carding a team score of 288 for a 3-round team total of 863 (287-288-288). Kai Rastetter was the low Spartan at +1 (71-67-73) finishing tied for 18th among 76 division I players. Freshman Brendan Hunter played his best round of the tournament and managed a T34 finish at +4 for the event (72-72-70). Niklas Koerner carded three steady rounds of golf and finished at 6 over for three rounds and tied for 44 (71-72-73). Tommy Linehan shot his best round of the weekend during round 3 leaving him at +14 for the event (73-79-72). Chris Gentle and Anthony Berardo finished the tournament at +22 and +26 respectively.
The team is off next weekend, but will be back in action for following weekend at Odessa National Golf Club for the Goldey-Beacom Fall Invitational.
