Spartan Golf Alum Chris Gentle Captures North Shore Amateur Golf Championship

After a competitive and high-scoring Day 1 of the North Shore Amateur golf championship, all signs pointed to an interesting finale on Wednesday. However, Mother Nature had something to say about that.

The groups remaining 40-man field were able to at least tee off on the second day of the tournament at their respective holes at Far Corner Golf Club. Unfortunately by the time the final threesome got to their balls in the first fairway, the torrential rain had overtaken the course. Golfers attempted to wait out the rain from the clubhouse, but the intense weather would not let up, forcing tournament officials to call the event and award leader from the previous day, Christopher Gentle the outright title.

Gentle, a resident of Lowell, Massachusetts who graduated from St. Thomas Aquinas College in May, shot a 1-under par 71 on Tuesday, the only subpar round of the match.

Before yesterday’s round was called off, Gentle had played some pretty good golf despite tough course conditions in the opening round. The greens were unforgiving and the fairways quick due to their dry state.

Gentle might not have been able to attack the course quite like he would’ve liked, but STAC Alum did manage five birdies to go with four bogies and nine pars.

It’s been quite a summer for Gentle, who has competed in other respected tournaments such as the U.S. Amateur qualifier, the New England Amateur (7th-place finish) and the Mass. Amateur (making it to round of 16). The victory at Far Corner is one he’ll gladly add to his resume as he continues his path toward professional golf.
