Spartans Finish 8th at Wingate University Hargett Memorial

Monroe, N.C. - The St. Thomas Aquinas Men's Golf team opened up the spring season with an 8th place finish at the Hargett Memorial hosted by Wingate University. In their first action after the long winter layoff, the Spartans fired team rounds of 300-295-307. 

During the first round of play, the team was led by senior Joe Tammaro who carded an even par round of 72. Right behind him was newcomer Donte Groppuso who fired a solid round of 74. Nolan Skaggs put together a nice round of 76 while Norman Viron and Jake Yarmolowitz both posted rounds of 78. During the second round of the day, the Spartans were able to improve their team score by 5 shots. Jake Yarmolowitz bounced back nicely, carding a stellar 1-under par 71. Joe Tammaro put up another solid round of golf, shooting 73 while Nolan Skaggs put together a round of 75. Norman Viron battled for a round of 76, while Groppusso put up a round of 78. The team's day one score of 596 (300-295) left them in 8th place for the event.

In the final round of play, Donte Groppuso led the team with a round of 72. Norman Viron bounced back after a difficult start to his round, managing to card a 78. Tammaro, Yarmolowitz and Skaggs all shot rounds of 79 giving the team a final round score of 307. With a 2 day total of 916 (300-295-307), the Spartans held their position for an 8th place finish. 

Playing as individuals in the event, freshman Mario Mojarro Monge shot rounds of 78-78-78; Tanner Little shot 79-85-81 and Niall Griffin carded rounds of 88-82-78.

The team is back in action on March 21 and 22 at the Crofton Invitational hosted by Cal. U. of Pennsylvania.
