The St. Thomas Aquinas men's basketball team lost to visiting Queens College, 80-69. The Spartans received 25 points and 5 rebounds from Vincent Johnson. Johnson went 7-14 from the field and 3-6 from behind the arc while adding 2 steals. The Spartans opened the game on a 7-0 run with all of their points coming from Johnson.
Queens responded with an 8-0 run to take the lead before Johnson hit his second 3-pointer to put STAC ahead 10-8. Khalil McDonald rattled off six points for the Knights to spark a run and give them an 18-12 lead. Queens extended their lead to eleven in the first half but the Spartans continued to fight closing the gap to 38-34 at the half. Jamie Blanchard had 11 points in the first half and 13 for the game.
Freshman Justin Brown made a layup and converted a free throw to tie the game at forty. STAC took a two point lead on two occasions but Queens went on a 21-7 run to open the game and give them the largest lead of the night. The Spartans got within four with 1:35 remaining in the game behind a layup by Brown. Queens went 7-8 from the charity stripe to finish off the game.
The Spartans will be back in action on Saturday as they host Felician College for a 3:00 PM game.
