Sharp Shooting Leads STAC to 5th Straight Win, 90-64, over Roberts Wesleyan

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team stayed hot with a convincing 90-64 East Coast Conference victory over Roberts Wesleyan at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans, ranked #7 in this week's NCAA East Region poll, have now won five straight to improve to 21-5 overall and 13-3 in the ECC, moving into a second place tie with Molloy, just one game behind Daemen. Roberts Wesleyan now stands at 13-11, 9-7 with the loss.

With Friday's big win over Daemen College fresh in mind, the Spartans rode three-pointers from Kam Murrell, Demetre Roberts, and Louis Griffith to a 12-2 run, giving the hosts an 18-10 advantage. The Redhawks made it a two point game with treys from Peyton McLaurin and Fope Okuyiga, but STAC held them to just one field goal over a span of over five minutes, with another Griffith bomb opening a 30-18 gap. Osbel Caraballo capped the scoring from deep in the final seconds, sending the Spartans to the locker room with a 46-25 halftime lead.

Any hope for a Roberts Wesleyan comeback were dashed when Griffith added back-to-back threes to extend the margin to 62-35, and the Spartans never looked back. Caraballo posted 18 points, Griffith added 16, and Murrell scored 13 to lead STAC, with Justin Vaughn amassing a game-high 19 for the Redhawks.

The Spartans have two games remaining in the regular season, both in ECC play, starting at Queens College on Wednesday, February 27, with a 5:00 pm tip (note start time). They return to Aquinas Hall for Senior Day on Saturday, March 2, hosting Molloy College for a showdown that could determine a first round tournament bye, with double-header action starting at approximately 3:00 pm, following the women's game at 1:00. The three-time defending ECC Tournament champs have assured a slot in this year's event, which starts at high seeds on Wednesday, March 6, before moving to the University of Bridgeport for the semis and finals and March 9 and 10, respectively.
