Offensive Explosion Sparks #15/18 STAC Men to 105-92 Triumph over New York Tech

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team jumped ahead early and cruised to a 105-92 victory over New York Tech in an East Coast Conference tilt at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans have won three straight and 12-of-14 overall to improve to 22-4, and remain in second place in the ECC standings at 12-2. With the loss, Tech dropped to 6-20, 5-9, remaining in the hunt for a post-season tournament berth.

A pair of Brendan Redendo free throws capped a 12-5 burst as New York Tech took a 14-11 lead with nearly seven minutes elapsed. The Spartans remained unfazed as back-to-back three pointers from Louis Griffith and Brendan Smith capped a 10-0 answer to grab a 21-14 advantage. Opong Bramble's three with 7:25 left kept the Bears close at 31-26, but Osbel Caraballo took over the game with the next seven straight points, and a wild 8-3 burst in the final 2:09 of the half guided the hosts to a 53-38 gap at intermission.

Any thoughts of a comeback for the visitors were quickly dashed by an early 13-4 run as St. Thomas Aquinas opened a commanding 66-45 chasm with 14:22 to go and they were never threatened thereafter. Caraballo led all scorers with 25 points, Sekou Cisse poured in 17, Demetre Roberts added 16, and Griffith recorded 10 off the bench as STAC's 105-point outburst was the team's largest since a 124-76 drubbing of LIU Post at Aquinas Hall on February 9, 2019.

The Spartans now hit the road for a showdown between the two top-ranked teams in the East, as the second-ranked Spartans take in the top-ranked University of Bridgeport on Wednesday, February 26. They return to Aquinas Hall to close out the regular season against the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday, February 29, with start time approximately 3:00 pm, after the conclusion of the women's game.
