#17/11 Spartans Complete Weekend Sweep in 90-85 OT Thriller at Roberts Wesleyan

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team captured a 90-85 overtime triumph in an East Coast Conference battle at Roberts Wesleyan College. The nationally-ranked Spartans now stand at 6-0 overall and 5-0 in the ECC, with their win streak extending to nine including last season, with RWC now standing at 4-5, 2-3.

STAC was looking for the rare weekend hat-trick - three wins in as many days - after coming out on top at Saint Rose on Friday and at Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday. Jamal Barnes hit a three-pointer to make the score 18-11 after six minutes to play, which turned out to be the largest lead for either team. Isaiah Lewis hit a three with seven minutes left to bring the Redhawks even at 29-29, but an Osbel Caraballo hoop in the final minute staked the visitors to a narrow 45-43 halftime lead.

Both teams tried in vain to hold the momentum in the second half, with STAC matching its biggest margin at 73-66 only to see RWC reel off five straight to narrow the gap again. Caraballo's layup with 2:43 left gave the Spartans a 79-73 edge with 2:43 left, but that was to the their last points of regulation, as Amari Lee knotted the score with :08 left to extend the long weekend for another five minutes of play.

Roberts Wesleyan grabbed a two-point lead three times during the extra session, only to see STAC answer each time, fitting for a contest which saw 14 lead changes and 15 ties throughout the afternoon. Demetre Roberts provided the final lead change, putting the Spartans on top with a bucket with :48 left, before adding one of two from the line for an 88-85 margin. Reggie Clark's game-tying attempt with 10 seconds left was off the mark, and Antonio Vendola sank a pair to close out the day.

Demetre Roberts was the star for STAC with a game high 24 points and eight rebounds, with Caraballo coming off the bench to chip in 17 points, and Louis Griffith (14) and Grant Singleton (11) also reaching double-figures. All but five Redhawks points came from their starting five, with Lewis posting 20 and Arman Nasseri adding 17.

After claiming three tough road triumphs in a span of 50 hours, the Spartans close out their road trip on Wednesday, February 17, in an ECC tilt at Mercy College. They return to Aquinas Hall to host Molloy College on Saturday and Sunday, February 20 and 21, but both games starting at 2:00 pm.
