STAC Registers 3rd Straight Win in 91-77 Decision over Mercy

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's basketball team captured a 91-77 East Coast Conference victory over Mercy College at Aquinas Hall. The Spartans are now a perfect 3-0 overall and in ECC play to start the season, and extended their overall win streak to six dating to last season. With losses in both ends of their season-opening series, Mercy slips to 0-2, 0-2.

Coming off Saturday's 119-77 victory, an early run sparked STAC to a 10-3 lead and a pair of Jamal Barnes three-pointers opened that gap to 19-5. The high-scoring Spartans then went just over three minutes without a point and Mercy's Kerwin Prince scored to draw within 19-11 midway through the half. It was then the Mavericks' turn to endure a three-minute drought and STAC answered with eight straight with Barnes adding two more shots from deep in the midst of a decisive 18-2 run to expand to a 37-13 margin.

ECC Player of the Week Grant Singleton's three gave the hosts a 42-17 advantage with just under three to play before cruising to halftime with a 44-21 lead. Demetre Roberts added a trey just over three minutes into the half as the Spartans maxed their lead at 54-25 before cruising to the finish. Singleton led five STAC players in double-figures with 19 points, aided by Roberts (18), Barnes (15), Louis Griffith (10), and Elijah Bovell (10), while Singleton and Kobe Opoku shared the game-high in rebounds with eight each. Kerwin Prince was again the standout for Mercy with a game-high 24 points.
