STAC Men's Basketball Wins 10th Straight with Decisive 94-55 Win at D'Youville

Buffalo, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team won its 10th straight contest, while completing a weekend sweep of Western New York teams, with a 94-55 triumph over D'Youville University on Sunday afternoon at the College Center Gymasium.

STAC improves to 22-4 and 15-1 in the ECC on the season, keeping pace with conference foe Daemen College in the ECC standings. Meanwhile, D'Youville drops to 2-23 and 1-14 in conference play.

Grant Singleton led the Spartan offense with 17 points, while Elijah Bovell (16 points), Luis Risquez (14 points), Jamal Barnes (14 points) and Jerrel Kelly (10 points) also scored in double figures. Mason Putnam (20 points) and Chris Stineman (10 points) paced the Saints.

STAC shot 50.6 percent from the field (39-77), while D'Youville shot 36.8 percent (21-57) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Nine players recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Demetre Roberts led the Spartans with nine assists on the afternoon.
  • Grant Singleton made 7 of his 12 field goal attempts, while Luis Risquez went 7-for-8 from the floor.
  • STAC out rebounded D'Youville 41-35 in 40 minutes of action, with Jamal Barnes grabbing six boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up eight steals in the contest, with the Saints turning the ball over on 15 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in five team statistical categories over D'Youville: Points off of Turnovers (24-5), Second Chance Points (14-4), Points in the Paint (54-22) Fastbreak Points (14-2) and Bench Points (37-12).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • STAC raced out to a quick 10-2 lead by the 16-minute media timeout and maintained an eight-point advantage (18-10) at the mid-way point of the first half.
  • The Spartans went on a 26-9 run from the 10-minute mark until the close of the first half to lead 44-19 through 20 minutes of action.
  • Jamal Barnes led all scorers with 12 first half points for STAC, while Mason Putnam had seven points for D'Youville.
  • Following the halftime break, St. Thomas Aquinas would continue to pour it on offensively, building a 30-point (56-26) margin early on in the stanza.
  • Despite the host Saints multiple attempts at making a comeback, the Spartans would maintain double-digit leads throughout the half. 
  • STAC would get its largest lead of the contest late (41 points) at 94-53 and take the victory, 94-55.
  • Grant Singleton was on fire in the second stanza, going 6-for-8 from the field and 2-for-3 from beyond the arc, picking up 14 points.
