Four Spartans Score in Double-Figures, as STAC Powers Past Bloomfield, 97-82

Sparkill, N.Y. - A 52-point second half powered the St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team to a 97-82 triumph over Bloomfield College on Saturday afternoon at Aquinas Hall Gymnasium in Sparkill.

The Spartans improve to 6-3 on the season with the victory, while the Bears drop to 1-5 overall.

11 different players recorded a point for STAC, with Osbel Caraballo and Grant Singleton leading the way with 17 points each. Demetre Roberts also posted an 15-point day, with Jamal Barnes chipping in 10 points. Andres Fulgencio of Bloomfield led all scorers with 29 points.

STAC shot 59.7 percent from the field (40-67) in their return to Aquinas Hall, while making 9-of-21 treys and 8-of-13 free-throw attempts. Bloomfield shot 46.9% (30-64) from the floor and made 14-of-20 free throw attempts.

STAC Notes and Highlights: 

  • Ten different players recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • DeVante Jamison led the Spartans with seven assists on the afternoon.
  • Grant Singleton made 7 of his 10 field goal attempts on the day, with Osbel Caraballo going 7-for-11 and Demetre Roberts shooting 6-for-10.
  • The Spartans were 18-33 (54.5%) from the field in the first half and 22-34 (64.7%) in the second half.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up 12 steals in the contest, with Bloomfield turning the ball over on 20 occasions.
  • Bloomfield held the edge on the boards, 37-30, with Andres Fulgencio grabbing eight himself.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas scored 50 of its 97 points in the paint, while Bloomfield got 57 of their 82 points from the bench.
  • STAC is now 2-0 at Aquinas Hall in the 2021-22 season.

How it Happened:

  • STAC opened the contest leading by as many as seven points (13-6), before Bloomfield climbed back within one at 17-16 with 12:36 to play in the first half.
  • The teams would trade baskets, with the Spartans maintaining slim margins throughout the final 12 and a half minutes of the half to hold a three-point advantage (45-42) at the break.
  • Bloomfield battled to get within one point (45-44 and 47-46), before taking a their largest lead of the game at 49-47, courtesy of a Jahsiem Davis three-point jumper at the 16:30 mark, forcing a STAC 30-second timeout.
  • Antonio Vendola regained the lead for the Spartans just seconds later via a trey of his own to make it 50-49.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas never allowed Bloomfield to tie or take the lead again in the contest, as STAC would expand its margin on the scoreboard to as big as 17 points (97-80) just before the close of the game.
  • Every one of the 11 players in maroon and gold to see action in the second half recorded at least one point, with Grant Singleton leading the way with 11.
