Spartans Win Fourth Straight, Cruising to 83-48 Victory over Mercy

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team rolled to its fourth straight victory on Wednesday evening with an 83-48 decision over the Mercy College at Aquinas Hall.

Ten different players recorded a point for the Spartans (16-4, 9-1 ECC), with Osbel Caraballo leading the way with 19 points. Grant Singleton (10 points), Demetre Roberts (10 points) and Jamal Barnes (10 points) also scored in double-figures in the contest.

STAC shot 52.4 percent from the field (33-63) in the conference contest, while sinking 9-of-18 (50.0%) shots from behind the arc. Mercy shot 27.1% (16-59) and made 8-of-20 three-point attempts.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS: 

  • Ten different players recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Demetre Roberts led the Spartans with six assists.
  • Osbel Caraballo each made 9 of his 15 field goal attempts in the game, with Jamal Barnes going 4-for-5.
  • The Spartans were 19-37 (51.4%) from the field in the first half and 14-26 (53.8%) in the second half.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up 10 steals on the night, while forcing 22 Mercy turnovers.
  • STAC out rebounded Mercy 39-35 through 40 minutes of action, with Grant Singleton, Sean Moore and Osbel Caraballo leading the way for the Spartans, grabbing five boards each.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in three team statistical categories over the Mavericks: Points off of Turnovers (28-9), Points in the Paint (40-14) and Bench Points (30-8).

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • STAC raced out to a 13-4 lead at first media time out of the contest and held double-digit margins throughout the remainder of the half.
  • The Spartans expanded their advantage by as much as 27 points, at 43-16, which was the halftime score as the teams headed to their respective locker rooms.
  • Osbel Caraballo led all scorers with 15 first half points for St. Thomas Aquinas, while Jayden Dewaal registered a team-high four of Mercy's 16 total points through 20 minutes of action.
  • Mercy returned from the break, attempting to chip away at their deficit, scoring the first five points of the stanza, to make it 43-21. 
  • However, the Spartans would continue to surge offensively, holding onto multiple 25 plus point advantages and late in the game, posted it's largest lead (36 points) at 73-37.
