Red-Hot Spartans Beat Staten Island, 99-64 for Eighth Consecutive Victory

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team earned its eighth consecutive victory on Saturday afternoon with 99-64 decision over the College of Staten Island at Aquinas Hall.

Ten different players recorded a point for the Spartans (12-3, 5-0 ECC), with Osbell Caraballo leading the way with 22 points. Grant Singleton (20 points), Vasilis Tolias (14 points) and Jamal Barnes (10 points) also scored in double-figures on the evening.

STAC shot 48.6 percent from the field (36-74) in the conference contest, while making 10-of-23 (43.5%) shots from behind the arc. Staten Island shot 42.3% (22-52) and made three of their 11-of-31 three-point attempts.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS: 

  • Ten different players recorded double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • DeVante Jamison led the Spartans with seven assists.
  • Osbel Caraballo each made 9 of his 15 field goal attempts in the game, with Singleton going 6-for-12.
  • The Spartans were 17-37 (45.9%) from the field in the first half and 19-37 (51.4%) in the second half.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up nine steals on the night, while forcing 27 CSI turnovers.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The visiting Dolphins opened quick 3-0 and 10-7 leads, causing the Spartans to call an early timeout to settle the troops.
  • STAC battled back to take an 11-10 advantage with just over 16 minutes left in the opening stanza.
  • From that point on, it was mostly all Spartans, as they built an 11-point margin midway through the first half at 36-25.
  • Staten Island would chip away at multiple double-digit STAC advantages in the later stages of the frame, cutting their deficit to only four (49-45) at the halftime break.
  • Grant Singleton and Osbel Caraballo paced the offense for the Spartans in the first half, with 11 and 10 points, respectively, while the Dolphins Luis Armas recorded 11 points and Bryce Waterman posted 10 points.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas returned to the court for second half action on a torrid pace, outscoring Staten Island 50-19 in the final 20 minutes of action.
  • The Spartans largest lead of the contest (35 points) actually came in the closing seconds on a pair of Jamal Barnes free-throws. Osbell Caraballo led the Spartans charge in the stanza, with 12 points.
  • STAC's bench scored 39 of the team's 99 total points.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas logged 41 points off of turnovers and 17 second chance points.
