Spartans Erase Early Deficit to Down Molloy, 86-53

Sparkill, N.Y. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Basketball team erased an early 11-point first half deficit to down Molloy University, 86-53, in East Coast Conference action on Wednesday evening at Aquinas Hall.

STAC improves to 21-5 overall and 12-2 in the ECC, while Molloy slips to 6-18 and 4-9 on the year.

Kyle Pulliam led the way for the maroon and gold with a team-high 16 points, while teammates Ethan Millirons (15 points) and James Patterson (12 points) also posted double figures in scoring.

STAC shot 42.5 percent (31-73) from the field, while Molloy shot 37.3 percent (22-59) from the floor.

STAC NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Ten Spartans logged double-digit minutes in the contest.
  • Rich Smith led the maroon and gold with eight assists on the night.
  • Kyle Pulliam hit 6 of his 15 field goal attempts. Meanwhile, Ethan Millirons went 5-for-10 from the floor, with all five shots going in from downtown.
  • STAC out-rebounded Molloy by a 41-24 margin, with Rich Smith grabbing a game-high 12 boards for the Spartans.
  • St. Thomas Aquinas picked up nine steals, with the Lions turning the ball over on 14 separate occasions.
  • The Spartans earned advantages in five team statistical categories over Molloy: Points off Turnovers (23-7), Second Chance Points (22-6), Points in the Paint (38-24), Fastbreak Points (14-0) and Bench Points (30-24).
  • The game featured one tie and three lead changes.
  • STAC's largest lead of the contest came the closing moments of the second half, when the Spartans led by 33 points, 86-53 on a Deshawne Crim made three-point jumper.
  • Trailing 17-6 with a little over 12 minutes to play in the opening stanza, St. Thomas Aquinas outscored Molloy 36-14 from that point on to take a 42-31 lead into the halftime locker room.
  • Kyle Pulliam led all scorers with 14 first half points for the Spartans, while shooting 55.9 percent (5-of-9) from the field and a 60.0 percent (3-of-5) from three.
  • The Spartans outscored the Lions by a 2 to 1 margin in the second half, 44-22.

MOLLOY NOTES AND HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Eight Lions logged double-digit minutes in the contest. 
  • Jalen Rosemond led Molloy with a game-high 18 points.
  • Saba Beroshvili led the Lions with a two assists on the evening.
  • Jalen Rosemond went 8-for-15 from the floor. Meanwhile, Mick Browne hit 3 of his 8 shots from the field.
  • Rosemond grabbed a team-high seven boards for the Lions.
  • Molloy picked up two steals, with the Spartans turning the ball over on 10 separate occasions.
  • Molloy had its largest lead of the game (11 points) in the middle of the first half at 17-6.
  • Jalen Rosemond led the Lions with 10 points in the opening half.
  • In a tale of two halves Molloy shot 48.0 percent (12-for-25) from the field in the first half, but only 29.4 percent (10-of-34) in the second stanza.
  • The three-point power outage got no better in the men's contest, as Molloy shot just 20.0 percent (3-for-15) from beyond the arc.
  • Combined, the Molloy men's and women's teams shot 11.1 percent (3-for-27) from downtown on the night.
