Spartans Score Nine in Win Against SUNY Maritime

Shaun Benson had a goal and two assists for the St. Thomas Aquinas College Spartans in a 9-5 win against the SUNY Maritime College Privateers at World Ice Arena in Flushing, NY on Saturday night.

Stephen Finkel and Tyler Brooks each scored two goals, while Patrick Burns, Douglas Harrison, Zachary Teats and Brandon Politza had a goal apiece, and Carl Lorenz (W, 2-4) made 29 saves for the Spartans.

Maritime opened the scoring, as Harrison Yaeger tallied just 5:17 into the first. However, St. Thomas Aquinas was able to light the lamp with two consecutive goals by Stephen Finkel (6:08) and Tyler Brooks (19:40) to make it a 2-1 STAC advantage at the intermission.

The middle stanza saw the Spartans score three more times, with Patrick Burns getting himself onto the scoresheet at 3:29 (PP Goal) and Brooks and Finkel picking up their second goals of the game at 4:48 and 12:47 (PP Goal), respectively. The Privateers were also able to light the lamp on three occasions in the period, as Joseph Antonacci (7:04), Brendan Burns (7:29) and Kyle DiLeo (16:44) all scored. However, STAC held a slim 5-4 lead at the end of the second period.

In the final period of play, STAC picked up four additional goals, as Douglas Harrison (:31), Zachary Teats (1:08), Shaun Benson (8:41) and Brandon Politza (12:09/PP Goal) all found the back of the net. Maritime tried to climb back into the game, as Matthew Freitas picked up a goal for the Privateers at 2:12, but it was not enough and St. Thomas Aquinas skated to victory.

Shots on goal for the game were 35 for St. Thomas Aquinas and 34 for SUNY Maritime.

St. Thomas Aquinas College (3-4) next heads to the Barnabas Health Hockey House at the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on Sunday, November 4th for another big MCHC contest with Stevens Institute of Technology. Puck drop is scheduled for 8:30pm.
