Spartans Fall to MCHC Defending Champion Fordham Rams, 10-3

The St. Thomas Aquinas College Ice Hockey team dropped a 10-3 road decision to Fordham University on Sunday evening at Ice Hutch Ice Rink.

In the opening period, the defending MCHC Champion Rams, tallied three times on goals by John Cernero, Zach Brenner and Mike Gamby before the game was six minutes old, to take a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

However, the Spartans tried to chip away at the deficit, as Captain Shaun Benson put St. Thomas Aquinas on the board 4:16 into the middle stanza, making it 3-1. Unfortunately, Fordham struck again four more times in the period on goals by Gamby Cernero, Brenner and Harrison D'Agostino, extending the Rams lead to 7-1 after two periods of play.

The third period saw a goaltending change for STAC, as Peter Gianatiempo spelled Carl Lorenz in net for the final frame. Fordham would score just a little over three minutes in, as Frank Taddeo was able to solve Gianatiempo for an 8-1 Ram advantage. St. Thomas Aquinas was able to get onto the scoresheet again when Douglas Harrison tallied with 8:19 left, making it a 6-goal spread at 8-2. Unfortunately, Fordham was not done lighting the lamp, and was able to pick up two additional goals by Joe Rocco and Connor Burke, which were on either side of a Zachary Teats late tally for the Spartans.

Spartan Goalie Carl Lorenz (L, 1-2) stopped 26 of 33 shots faced in two periods of action, while Peter Gianatiempo finished out the game and picked up 11 saves.

Shots on goal for the contest were 21 for St. Thomas Aquinas and 47 for Fordham.

St. Thomas Aquinas College will next face-off with the Hofstra University Pride on Friday, October 12 at Sport-O-Rama Ice Rinks, with puck drop scheduled for 8:30pm.
