Spartans Complete First Season at Georgian Court

The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's lacrosse team finished their inaugural season with a road game at Georgian Court on Monday.  STAC fell in a hard fought battle, 11-9.

Michael McNally scored the first goal of the game to give STAC a 1-0 lead.  The Lions Cory Boyle scored just ten seconds later to even things out.  The Spartans regained control of the first quarter with back to back goals; one from Thomas Hollway off an assist from Rob Hornberger and one from Kevin Alvora assisted by Hollway.  Georgian Court had the last goal of the quarter and the Spartans held a 3-2 advantage after the first fifteen minutes.  

STAC opened the second quarter with two more goals to give themselves a three goal lead. Hornberger scored unassisted and Kieran Lee scored off an assist from Pearl.  GCU added two more late goals to close out the half with the Spartans still ahead one, 5-4.

The Lions controlled the third quarter outscoring the Spartans 4-1 to take an 8-6 lead.  Jake Sherman had two goals for GCU in that stretch.  Alvora added his second goal of the game with 1:38 on the clock in the third.  

Hollway connected on his second goal of the game off an assist from Pearl to start the 4th quarter. Both teams went on to exchange a pair of goals, with Alvora and Holway each tallying their third goals for the game.  Samuel Montes added an assist for the Spartans but it was not enough to close the gap.  Georgian Court scored the final goal of the game with 2:24 remaining securing the 11-9 win.  

Ryan Mello had seven saves in the game.  The Spartans held a slight edge winning 12 out of the 22 faceoffs.   Mello finishes his first season as the Spartan goalie with 169 saves for the year.  

Hollway and Alvora led the offensive charge for the Spartans recording 20 and 13 points respectively.  Hollway had 16 goals and 4 assists while Alvora added 12 goals and 1 assist.  David Pearl led the Spartans in assists this season with 7 assists and also added 7 goals for the year. STAC had eleven different goal scorers this season and recorded 52 goals for the year.  

With a roster full of mostly freshmen, the Spartans will return their entire squad next season along with some new faces as they prepare to compete in the East Coast Conference under head coach John Carrozza.
