The St. Thomas Aquinas College men's soccer team settled for a 1-1 tie in a non-conference contest against the College of Staten Island at Spartan Field. The contest was the home opener for the Spartans, who are now 0-3-1 on the season while CSI stands at 1-3-1.

STAC took advantage of a major mistake early as Staten Island goalkeeper Jake Foeldes had the ball taken away by Sun Ming Cho who tapped it into the empty net at 12:03 to put the hosts on top. The Dolphins put more shots on frame for the remainder of the half but solid play by keeper Cameron Turner kept the Spartans on top at the break.

Both goalkeepers turned in outstanding saves but it was the visitors who would break through, as Jahmali Peterson broke free down the left side and sent a targeted shot for the far corner only to be turned aside on a spectacular diving save by Turner. Unfortunately for the Spartans, Philip Lefkowitz was right on the spot to convert the rebound to tie the score at 80:59.

After both teams were held shotless through the first 10-minute overtime session, STAC peppered four shots in the second but was unable to break through. Their best chance came with just under three minutes left when Jorge Mazariego's low shot from the top of the box skidded toward the inside of the post only to be denied by a diving Foeldes to preserve the deadlock. St. Thomas Aquinas held a narrow 14-13 edge in shots, with Turner credited with 10 saves and Foeldes making six.

The Spartans now move on to their East Coast Conference schedule which starts on Sataurday, September 21, when the University of Bridgeport pays a visit to Spartan Field. Game time is set for 1:00 pm as the back end of a double-header starting with the women's teams squaring off at 11:00 am.
