Men’s Soccer Earns Point with 1-1 Draw at Bridgeport

Bridgeport, Conn. – The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's soccer team continued its unbeaten streak in East Coast Conference play by earning a 1-1 draw against the University of Bridgeport on Saturday afternoon at Knights Field.

The game against the Purple Knights was the team's third of the year that went into overtime. Despite the equality in scoring, the Spartans earned an overall advantage in shots (13-12) and shots on-frame (5-2), while Bridgeport held the corner kicks mark (4-3) through 110 minutes of action.

St. Thomas Aquinas would get on the scoreboard in the final seconds of the first half, as Maxi Heuter would head a through ball to teammate Amaan Aslam for a partial breakaway. Aslam would blast a shot past Bridgeport keeper Clement Anet to make it 1-0 before the halftime buzzer.

After the break, it would take until 62nd minute for another goal to hit the back of the net. This time it would be for the host Purple Knights, as off of a corner kick a battle in the box for possession would ensue, with Felipe Ospina gaining control of the ball and passing it over to Wariebi Jituboh, who would boot it past STAC keeper Asier Vegas at the left post to tie the game at 1-1.

The teams battled to get the go-ahead goal as the clock wound down, with STAC getting several quality chances, but it was inconsequential as the game was forced into overtime with the score knotted up at 1-1.

In extra time, Bridgeport would register all four shots taken across the two 10-minute overtime periods, with two going wide and two going high of the goal to keep the match tied through 110 minutes of play.

Both Bridgeport and STAC earned a key conference point in the standings, as the teams hit the homestretch of regular season play and start to focus on seeding in the ECC Men's Soccer Tournament.
