STAC Men's Soccer Bests UDC, 3-1, As ECC Playoff Race Heats Up

Washington, D.C. - The St. Thomas Aquinas College Men's Soccer team kept their postseason hopes alive with a key 3-1 ECC victory over the University of the District of Columbia on Saturday afternoon at the MD Sports Complex.

STAC improves to 5-5-4 overall and 1-2-3 in the ECC, while UDC falls to 5-7-1 and 1-5.

How it Happened

  • Kevon Evans opened the scoring for the Spartans in the 10th minute, when a UDC free kick was immediately turned over to STAC and Jorge Umana sent a high rising shot, finding Evans going toward the Firebirds goal. Evans corralled the ball and fired a rolling shot past keeper Simon Birnstad and to the back of the net to make it 1-0.
  • No further scoring took place in the first half, with UDC taking a 10-6 shots advantage into the halftime break.
  • Following the intermission, the host Firebirds got to work and finally tied the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute, with a free kick by Eduardo Bugay finding the head of teammate Keino Thompson, who directed a shot past keeper Tabor McDaniels.
  • The first of two late goals for the Spartans came in the 75 minute, as Tristan Greenidge put home a rebound, following a save by Simon Birnstad on another free kick to make it 2-1.
  • STAC's insurance goal came 10 minutes later, when a UDC turnover resulted in a Yahir Hernandez blast on frame and past Birnstad, with the assist going to Jorge Umana, giving the maroon and gold the 3-1 lead.
  • UDC would get several quality chances in the final minutes of the match, but Tabor McDaniels would come up with multiple saves to help preserve the victory.
