Spartans Sweep Western New York Series As STAC Bests Daemen, 5-4

TOWNSHIP OF WASHINGTON, NJ -  Playing at the Washington Township Tennis and Fitness Center, the St. Thomas Aquinas College men’s tennis team defeated Daemen College, 5-4, in yet another close match in the East Coast Conference.  Double winners for the Spartans were Aaron Stahl ’18 (Dusseldorf, Germany), Javier Munoz ’17 (Sevilla, Spain), and Andreu Ferragut ’18 (Palma de Mallorca, Spain).

The Spartans again started hot, taking two of three doubles matches.  Stahl and Munoz won at first doubles, defeating Mark Veitengruber and John LeMar, 8-5.  Ferragut and Roger Almato ’19 (Vic, Spain) teamed at second doubles to win 8-6 against Joey Gentile and Greg Lowe.

With the match tied at 4-4, Stahl won the decisive point in a back and forth first singles slate, 7-6 (1), 6-2 over Veitengruber.  The win marked Stahl’s eleventh consecutive victory in singles action.

Munoz won at second singles, 6-3, 6-2, over Joey Gentile, and Ferragut defeated Andrew LeMar 6-2, 6-4 at third singles to round out the scoring.

The win was the fourth consecutive triumph for the Spartans, a mark that is the second-longest in program history.  Earlier this fall, St. Thomas Aquinas won their first five consecutive dual matches to start the season.  This is also the first time in program history that the Spartans have started conference play with a 2-0 record.  STAC is back in action on Saturday, April 9 at Caldwell University, with a noon start time.
