Spartans Continue Strong Play With, 7-2 Win Over USP

SPARKILL, NY -  The St. Thomas Aquinas men's tennis team defeated a tough opponent in the University of the Sciences, 7-2.  Javier Munoz '17 (Sevilla, Spain) and Andreu Ferragut '18 (Palma de Mallorca, Spain) continued their strong starts to the season with wins at second and third singles, respectively.  

Double winners for the Spartans include Ferragut, James Bruce '19 (London, England), Hugo Preussler '19 (Caxias do Sul, Brazil), and Roger Almato '19 (Vic, Spain).  In doubles action, Ferragut paired with Bruce at second doubles to win 8-2, while Preussler and Almato won their first match together at third doubles 8-6.  

The Spartans headed in to singles play up 2-1 in the match. Munoz won 6-0, 6-3 for the first point in singles play, while Ferragut won 6-3, 6-4.  Bruce won at fourth singles 6-4, 6-1, and Almato won at sixth singles 6-2, 6-0.  Aaron Stahl '18 (Dusseldorf, Germany) lost in the third set super tie break at first singles to Jake Sosonkin, who was ranked as high as #10 in the East Region a year 
ago.  

In the last match of the day, Preussler defeated Chandat Phan in the third set super tie break.  The even-keeled freshman battled back from a disappointing second set to win the match and cap a successful day for the Spartans.
